Oral Hygiene Care
The team at Smiles by Bigelow is committed to helping you maintain life-long dental health. However, achieving a healthy, radiant smile requires more than care from Dr. Bigelow; patients must also maintain a good hygiene habits, including:
Your physical and oral are closely related. To preserve good oral health, it is vital to eat healthy foods and maintain a proper diet. When you avoid sugary foots and snacking frequently, you are less likely to incur cavities. Sugary snacks and drinks coat your teeth in sugar and promote the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. Regularly eat healthy foods and brush your teeth to fight cavities. It is also important to drink water every day to help flush unwanted food particles from your teeth.
When brushing your teeth, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small strip of toothpaste that has fluoride. Move the brush in small circular motions to help reach any particles of food that may be stuck underneath your gum line. Angle your toothbrush and brush carefully and slowly, making sure to cover the surface of each tooth and all the areas in-between your teeth. It takes several minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth. To avoid the accumulation of plaque and food particles, it is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day.
Using dental floss is an effective way to remove plaque and food particles from hard to reach areas between your teeth. Dental floss is a very thin thread of waxed nylon that can clean between your teeth and reach below your gum line. To maintain good oral health, it is important to floss between your teeth every single day. Before going to bed, floss to make sure your teeth are clean. For patients who have just started to floss, it is normal for your gums to bleed slightly. However, if the bleeding does not stop after the first few times flossing, please let our team know at your next dental appointment.
In addition to your daily oral hygiene routine, it is very important that you visit Dr. Bigelow at least once every six months for cleanings and exams. Dr. Bigelow has years of experience thoroughly cleaning and restoring his patients teeth. When you attend your exams, we have a chance to evaluate your oral health and help prevent future problems. Attending regular cleanings with Dr. Bigelow will help you avoid future dental problems. During your regular cleanings, it is normal to receive:
- Root Planing
