TMJ Therapy

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) refers to a group of disorders that affect the joint that joins the skull to the jaw (the TMJ). This disorder can often result in pain, discomfort, earaches, migraines, and difficulty with the jaw. Some of the many causes of TMJD include:

  • Stress
  • Trauma to the TMJ or jaw
  • Arthritis
  • Teeth grinding
  • Misaligned bite
  • Poor posture
  • Jaw dislocation
  • Illness or disease
  • Clenching of the jaw

Symptoms of this disorder may not always seem to be related to your TMJ. Some TMJD symptoms include:

  • A popping sound when closing or opening the mouth
  • Trouble chewing and opening or closing the mouth
  • A toothache/earache not caused by other dental issues or infection
  • Recent changes to the bite
  • Pain in the jaw when yawning, biting, chewing, or speaking
  • Prevalent soreness or pain in the jaw
  • A stiff or ‘locked’ jaw when yawning, biting, chewing, or speaking
  • Recurring migraines or tension headaches upon waking
